How To Body Score Your Alpaca
There is no right answer for how much grain and hay to feed your alpacas, each one is different. The most important thing to learn is how to "feel" for your alpacas weight condition.
The best place to "feel" your alpacas weight is on its lower back, in front of the hips, but behind the ribs. Put your hands on top of your alpaca with the heels of your hands together, making sure they are pointed toward the ground.
If Your Alpaca Feels:
Round = Right (If your alpaca is round, this is its proper weight)
Flat = Fat (If your alpaca feels flat, it is overweight)
Triangle = Skinny (If your alpaca feels pointy, it is probably too skinny)
It is important to make body scoring a frequent habit. This helps to prevent or treat any issues whether it be feed, health, or parasite problems.
